High quality entries have been taken for Mildura’s, Easter Saturday, “King of the Murray” Arena Motocross event, which is part of Mildura’s wonderful Easter Power Sports Promotion.

Top fields in both the Pro Open and Pro Lite classes will ensure that Mildura fans and the district’s thousands of visitors will see some spectacular racing in all divisions under the lights of Mildura’s great ArenaX venue.

A fine list of Victoria’s top motocross exponents has taken the opportunity to make the Easter Saturday night event something quite special, as they have entered in large numbers. The Mildura Club have had to separate the A and B grade riders from the C grade riders in each of Open and Lite class due to the host of entries. The Mildura Club is very pleased with the quality of the entrants and expect that a great display will be shown.

Regular National Motocross riders, the Carafa brothers, Julian and Justin, will head the bill in the Pro Open, 450cc class along with Kane Scanlon, and Brenton Keep, with Jason McGinness, Jeremy Laycock also entered to mix it with local riders Nathan Trigg and Jackson Caldwell, who has completed his recuperation from the leg operation of last year. The well respected, Bendigo based top Enduro rider, Craig Rutherford, will also add a touch of spice to the event. Rutherford has been coming to Mildura for many years and always puts on a great show. The riding in this class will be outstanding, as all riders are in peak form and will be looking to the Mildura event to keep their skill level sharp, as they are in between Victorian Motocross Championship rounds. Keep and Scanlon had some great battles in the first round of the series and to be joined by the Carafa boys as well as Laycock, McGinness will be exciting. “Jacko”Caldwell is probably the best accredited local so will use his local knowledge to best advantage.

The starts for this group will be most important as is the sharpness of the thought required on riders as they circulate on the concentrated venue. This is excellent training for the riders top keep them on song for their season ahead.

In the Pro Lite division there are again excellent quality entries, with former SupaX rider, Josh Spanos, from the Riverland, coming to do battle with Mark Grove, Harrison Saunders and the very fast Nathan Trigg, who last event, rode on his 250cc two stroke machine and thrilled the large crowd in attendance. Other riders who will excite are former regular at Olympic Park speedway, Karlis Ezergalis, who has changed disciplines, along with Drew Micalleff, Jake Shadbolt, Luke Tierney, Lync Nietvelt and local improver James Bate, who has been riding well in Victorian company. These riders will add to the excitement in the Lite class, where the variation of machinery sometimes has an impact.

Good entries too, have been received in the top level Junior grade of 125cc, 2 stroke to 250cc 4 stroke, where Tyler Radford, Jacob Gleeson and Cody Jones are expected to be at the head of the stack again, but will be pressured by the likes of Zack Dean, Luke Polomka, Nathan Shaw, Ryan Shadbolt and Lloyd Bahr. This grade is always most interesting to watch, as the youngsters know no fear as they throw their machines over the massive table tops, swing through the berms and ride the rockers with great skill.

The top division of the 85cc junior division is expected to be a cut throat affair as Sam Stockman, Jack Coleman, Mitch Jenke, Jed Polomka, Harrison Smith and Jack Staunton fight for top honours in their section. Again this group is most competitive and many riders will want to give themselves a chance of taking the King of the Murray series prize.

A smaller entry of 85cc small wheel will also go around, where Toby Marshall and Lachlan Fisher will fight it out.

In the smallest division, the 65cc events, Harrison Smith and Jack Staunton should continue their good form with Solly Marshall, Jack Deayton and Tanner Lovell nipping at their heels.

The 2012 King of the Murray series has been most successful and overall prizes will be awarded after the event for both he 3rd round winners and the “King of the Murray” in each class. The presentations will be in the Clubrooms.

A wonderful night of racing is expected and fans are reminded that Public Gates will open at 4:30pm, with Practice to run from 4:45pm until 5:30pm. Racing will commence at 6:00pm, with riders completing the first round in daylight, with further rounds to be completed under the lights of the Arena Motocross venue. Sign on and scrutineering for riders will commence at 2:00pm.

Patrons to Olympic Park are reminded that the Club offers a full catering service and that under the Club’s Licensing arrangements there must be No BYO by law.

Olympic Park Motorcycle Complex is straight out 11th Street West.

A wonderfully appreciative crowd enjoyed the riding and skills of the forty riders at Mildura’s Ulysses Classic speedway at Olympic Park last night.

More than one thousand Ulysses members joined the regular Mildura speedway fans to witness an event which had the visitors cheering and supporting good riding over the entire evening.

Good fields were evident in the major classes, particularly in the “Evolution” class for Solo machines, wherePerthriderKevin Webb, dominated with four excellent wins from his five rides. Webb, who was riding his 1962, Czech built, ESO machine, greeted the chequered flag ahead of local Jawa mounted rider, Moose McGowan, who was a star of Mildura’s Olympic Park a couple of decades ago. Webb was having his first ride at Olympic Park, a circuit which has some trepidation for newcomers, as they see the longish straights and the very tight corners, which have to be negotiated. Webb looked comfortable before the end of his first encounter and went on the have a brilliant night. Webb’s ESO machine was the forerunner of the now popular Jawa machine, which is still built in theCzechRepublicto this day.

Third place was the consistent, Loxton based, Ian Vallis, who was riding his JAP machine, one of the favourite bikes of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Vallis is very much an enthusiast who has a practice track on his farm and gets great enjoyment in seeing the various machines of yesteryear.

In fourth place overall, was Perth’s Jim Phillips, on his 1968 Jawa machine. Phillips is over 70 years old and is a former WA State champion, winning that Title in 1965. In 1968 Jim ventured toEnglandwhere he rode for the famous West Ham Club inLondon. The English bikes were further represented with Craig Laird, who rode his BSA bike, his specific machine was a regular at Olympic Park, back in the early 1070’s.

The later era, English built, Weslake machines were displayed by youngsters, Ryan Sedgmen and Tom Hedley, who shared the spoils of victory. These machines are nearly twenty years younger than the Evolution class, so were run separately.

Close tussles were seen in the 750cc Classic Sidecar class, where Mildura’s dale Milner / Nick O’Brien took the points, just ahead of the Gebhart family, which saw Dad, Rod on the throttle and son, Brodie, in the chair. Roly Paver / Rex Byrne and Simon Cohrs / Mick Powell were next on points, although Cohrs drew the crowd’s warm applause for his affable ways. Next in line was Neil Murtagh / Darcy Risstrom, from Pieter Hoogland / Jamie Knudsen.

The larger, 1000cc division saw the well travelled veteran, Nipper Crabb / Beth Pinfold, just win ahead of locals Dale Milner / Nick O’Brien and Byren Gates / Adon Pearce, with Lee Banks / Col Lintern finishing ahead of Peter Guest / John Sharman, who were mounted on the HRD Vincent.

A pair of two stroke 750cc Suzuki’s, both from Broken Hill, saw veteran and regular Olympic Park rider, Rob Kemp / Brodie Gebhart take the win from the Stephens brothers, Dan and Ricky.

The modern Solos, with their 4 valve, “lay down” engine configuration, provided the change of pace and there were some good battles between Tom Hedley, Brock Gates and Ryan Sedgmen from Brayden Paver and Reece Farr. The modern machines, although still 500cc produce much more power than their earlier conterparts.

The modern Sidecars were able to whet the appetites of the vocal supporters as to what is likely to happen tomorrow night when the Ulysses Speedway Spectacular is conducted.

Former Victorian Champion, Jason Bradshaw / Steve Behsmann, showed Corey Gates / Adon Pearce, the way of going around the tight confines of Mildura’s 302 metre circuit. Bradshaw is always fast around Olympic Park and has often claimed some very big scalps while riding on his home track. Bradshaw was able to power his 1000cc Yamaha superbike powered machine around the track using wonderful throttle control, showing the visitors what is in store for the Friday night meeting.

The Ulysses Speedway Spectacular on Friday night will see a strong field of modern Solos and Sidecars, with patrons getting the opportunity to see the Classic machines once again as they act as the support class for the main event. The swap in priority for the moderns and classics will continue to showcase Mildura’s Olympic Park to the visitors to the City, whereSpeedwayis one of the best supported sports in the region.

Mildura has developed many champions over the last six decades, with much of the success coming from the development of the Junior infield track at the venue.

The Junior support meeting, which began at 6:30pm, was enjoyed by all patrons and again, will be a highlight for many tomorrow night, as the younger riders enjoy their competition. Junior Solos and a purpose built 250cc powered Sidecar, the “Little weapon” will again be on show, along with a gaggle of pee-wee machines. The Mildura Club has been strong on its support for these junior development classes as the younger riders enjoy to have fun and learn the skills which could take them on a wonderful journey in the sport.

Gates open again on Friday night at 5:00pm. The Junior support meeting will commence at 6:30pm with the Senior Spectacular to commence at 7:30 sharp. Full catering is available trackside as is grandstand accommodation, which is on a first come, first served basis.

The North West Funerals, Sidecar Spectacular, has drawn the biggest entries to the field for many years, as Olympic Park hosts the event for the thirty – fifth time. The longest running non Title meeting in Australian speedway continues to gather kudos for participants, with Sidecar teams clambering over each other to make the cut in the main field.

Current World Champion, Darrin Treloar / Sam Gilbert, head the field with former dual World Champion, Mick Headland / Paul Waters slotting in very close behind. Star riders from Sydney, Adelaide, Broken Hill, Albury, Shepparton and Melbourne are joining the host of talent which is Mildura based, to make an amazing card for the event.

Treloar is a master at the start line, always using such positive drive from the gate and taking the good line into the apex of the turn. He also has the amazing ability to carry good corner speed and seems to always have his machine positioned in exactly the right place the get the best line down the straights. Sam Gilbert, Treloar’s passenger, is only young, but he is a great listener and a good doer, taking notice of those matters which Treloar directs, which already sees him as a fine passenger. The team continues to get more comfortable with each other, which sees the five times National Champ again in a good position to add to the silverware.

Mick Headland and Paul Waters are another combination who see the carrying of fast corner speed as the way to ride in modern speedway. Mick is one rider who is never beaten and Paul, does all his talking on the track, never leaving an opportunity to assist in putting the bike on exactly the right line, for the big positive blast out of the turns. Headland is a real wrestler with his machine, always wanting to be in charge of where the bike is positioned and his style is well suited to the local speedway patrons who demand great entertainment.

Newly crowned, Victorian Champion, Warren Monson / Matt Morgan, are fresh from a stirring win just two weeks ago, when they won all of their heat rides and then dominated the final, albeit that it started well after midnight at the car speedway at Wangaratta. Monson has been in superlative form this season and has come to grips with the power configuration of his machine which features massive torque due to the four engine cylinders effectively working as a twin cylinder machine.

Monson has shown, like all the top guns, that he too, can carry good corner speed and then when he opens the throttle at the exit of the turns, his machine responds using the excellent torque characteristics driving him down the straights with positive effect.

World beaters during this season have also been the “Dad’s Army” team of Chris Holmes / Neale Hancock, who have has some wonderful results over the last few meetings. The affable couple are enjoying their speedway as never before and they and the team have given many Mildura patrons great entertainment. Do not be at all surprised if Dad’s Army give the meeting a good shake once again.

Mildura’s own Jason Bradshaw / Steve Behsmann, will be seeking a good points score to make the final of the event, as will fourth in the World in 2011, Byren Gates / Mick O’Loughlin, who get around Mildura as efficiently as any team and Clint Mayes / Andrew Summerhayes and Dale Milner / Nick O’Brien.

Visitors from Broken Hill are Rick Stephens / Dean Hobbs, who will be pitting their skills against Adelaide’s Jason Hardy / Geoff Langdon, Damian Niesche / Jack Spear and the new pairing of Justin Plaisted / Sam Harrison, all of whom will want to master Olympic Park and get their name in lights. Plaisted takes Harrison as passenger for this meeting and will use all the expertise that Harrison has gained when previously swinging with Plaisted brother, Mark.

Victorians who will be seeking to do well will be Rick Curran / Chris Walker, both being sons of former Victorian greats, Clint Curran and 1980 Australian Champion passenger, Jamie Walker. Coming with such a pedigree the Curran / Walker combination have plenty of wise heads in the pits but it is the lads who have to do it out on the track.

Fellow Victorians, and a younger and already successful combination have been Lindsay McGregor / Mitch Duncan. This eastern Victorian team are exciting to watch and may well carry the future of Victorian Sidecar speedway in their hands. Mal German / Nick Schwartzer also wave the flag for the rest of Victoria. The always fiery, German does not mind swapping paint on the race track although race officials will always hope that contact is not severe or intentional.

Coming down from Sydney is the very young, Shane Hudson / Lionel Wardell team. These lads hold some future for NSW and see riding at Olympic Park as a must for their speedway learning. Hudson is from a speedway sidecar background and is now riding the bike which his father, Phil campaigned for many years.

A full field of reserves will race as support events for the night with the Cohrs brothers, team Radford / Puttkunz, who recently broke a gear box in their main machine, so will ride a spare along with Dan Stephens / Nick Pearce and Jason Trewin / Jake French in the support group.

Classic Sidecars will also be featured with Needham / Knudsen, the Gebharts, Paver / Byrne and the Cohrs boys, on an older machine.

Gates open at Olympic Park at 5:00pm with Senior Practice starting at 5:45. A small junior meeting will begin at 6:00pm with the Senior Parade commencing at 7:20. Senior racing will then begin at 7:30 sharp.

A full catering service is available and patrons are reminded that there must be no BYO by law.

Sidecar action will erupt tomorrow night, as the sixteen best sidecar teams in Australia descend on Mildura’s Olympic Park Speedway for Round Seven of the Sidecar Grand Slam.
The current World and five-time Australian champion pair of Darrin Treloar and Sam Gilbert will lead the talented field, which will also include two-time World Champions Mick Headland and Paul Waters.
Headland and Treloar have taken the only three World Championships to ever be decided, with Headland winning in England back in 2009, before backing up the following year in France, while Treloar winning his title back in November at Murray Bridge.
Fellow five-time Australian champions Glenn O’Brien and Aaron Maynard will also be using their knowledge and liking of the Olympic Park circuit to be at the top of the stack. O’Brien still holds the four lap track record at Mildura – a record he has held since his halcyon days during 1996.
Queenslanders, Brodie Cohen and Cal Campbell have been a successful pairing in the core group of the Grand Slam team and have, along with Trent and Jesse Headland, been ever present in recent finals. Both these young teams are the future of Australian Sidecar racing and all eyes will be on them for good signs ahead.
Mildura pair, Byren Gates and Mick O’Loughlin, have been core members of the travelling Grand Slam, and have had some good meetings along the way. The contracted Gates/O’Loughlin combination started the rounds in great form, being the finalists in the early meetings in Queensland. They will want to assert some authority over the Mildura meeting, showing all the, perhaps higher regarded teams that there is a faster local way around Olympic Park..
The Mildura round promises to be the toughest of the series so far, with the inclusion of not only the fast Kiwi team of Andrew Buchanan and Philippa Burns, but also all of Mildura’s regulars. The New Zealand couple have ridden well at Olympic Park on two previous occasions and have jumped at the chance to “cross the ditch” to run again amongst their new found friends.
All of the Mildura teams will be geared up to take some big scalps, with in-form pairs Mayes/Summerhayes, Bradshaw/Behsmann, Holmes/Hancock and Monson (now with temporary passenger Matt Morgan), all keen on a good showing in front of the home crowd. Any of these local combinations could cause problems as far as the top teams are concerned.
Travelling teams will also be looking to impress, with Shepparton duo, Mal German and Steven Stagg, Broken Hill’s, Rick Stevens and Dean Hobbs, and Adelaide’s, Shane Evans and Alan Gale to also be in the mix for good points.
Also included in the field will be the composite teams of Adelaide’s, Chris Pascoe and Mildura Motorcycle Club vice-president, Simon Cohrs, who will be hoping to reproduce their fine form of last year, where they did well in the Australian Championships and the World Titles.
Gates will also be looking to regain his form from the World Titles, which he rode with his recently injured brother, Deven, who is Warren Monson’s regular passenger. Deven and Warren had a big crash in Round Six of the Grand Slam, with Gates sustaining a broken leg.
The other composite team of former Australian champion passenger Justin Plaisted and Mildura local Mark Lucas will also be one to watch, with Plaisted stepping into the rider’s seat. Lucas is a brilliant passenger and teamed with a former expert passenger, now changed to manning the throttle, Lucas will assist Plaisted greatly in reading the track conditions well.
There are some very tough riders in the field, with no ‘beg-pardons’ expected. Plaisted, German, Monson and Stephens are all in a group where some contact seems to be accepted.
The sheer power, speed and technique of either team of Headlands, O’Brien, Treloar and Buchanan, along with the local experience of the Mildura riders, will give the meeting two areas of expertise for Sunraysia patrons to focus on. A full 20 heat program, plus a semi-final and a final will be used to determine the top dog at the Mildura venue.
Headland/Waters, Treloar/Gilbert and O’Brien/Maynard have played out much of the finals activity to date, with the local knowledge of all Mildura teams always to come to the fore.
Olympic Park gates will open from 5pm, with senior practice to take place at 5.45pm. A small junior meeting will follow, before a rider introduction at 7.20pm.
The Grand Slam will commence at 7.30pm, and will include some classic sidecars as support. Olympic Park has a full catering service available, with patrons reminded that there is no BYO by law.
